Salah Shukri Abu Latyef, 22, of Rahat

Dec 24, 2013 - Salah Shukri Abu Latyef, 22, of Rahat was shot and killed by sniper fire in a shooting attack near the Israel-Gaza border fence.

Salah Shukri Abu Latyef of the Bedouin town of Rahat in the Negev was operating a tractor for a drilling company hired by the Defense Ministry to repair a section of the Israel-Gaza border fence damaged in last week’s storm. He was shot in the center of his chest by a Palestinian sniper. Mortally wounded, he was flown by helicopter to Soroka University Medical Center in Beersheba but died of his wounds en route.
The Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) claimed responsibility for the shooting.
"We received the news with great pain," said Khaled Abu Latyef, the victim's uncle. "He was planning a life and was renovating his house as he was about to get married in the summer. He was a flower picked before its time."
"This was his first day working on the Gaza Strip border and unfortunately it was also his last day of life," his cousin said. Salah is survived by his parents and 11 siblings.
