Dror Hanin, 37, killed by mortar fire

While delivering food to soldiers

Jul 15, 2014 - Dror Hanin, 37, from Beit Aryeh was killed by a direct hit from a mortar fired by terrorists in the Gaza Strip near the Erez Crossing, while delivering food to soldiers there.
At about 7 pm, Dror Hanin arrived as a civilian volunteer at the border crossing to distribute food and drinks to soldiers stationed there. He was killed by a direct mortar hit. He was the first Israeli to be killed by enemy fire during Operation Protective Edge.
Dror had recently been employed as a project manager in a construction company.
Itzik Cohen, a childhood friend and neighbor, said he was "full of humor and always ready to help. There are few people like him, always willing to help and to contribute. Unfortunately, he paid for his kind heart with his life." A neighbor, Liron Eldar, said it was "so symbolic that Dror was killed while helping the soldiers in a dangerous zone. He always wanted to give, to help. He gave his love freely to anyone in need."
Avi Naim, Head of the Beit Aryeh Council, said, “The residents of Beit Aryeh are shocked at pained by the death of our friend, Dror Hanin, as he gave out gift bags to IDF soldiers near the Gaza Strip. Dror was a special person, motivated by values, who found his death while he did what he loved to do most - expressing love for his fellow man and endless giving."
Dror Hanin will be buried in the Yehud-Monoson cemetery. He is survived by his wife Rachel and their three children - daughter Shaked, 10, son Yoav, 6, and infant daughter Avigail.
